What is hemp protein powder?

Hemp protein powder is a food derived from hemp seeds. It can be used to supplement anyone's diet. Usually protein powders are used by sport people, bodybuilders and in fact it's very common to find them sold at gyms.

But you don't need to be an athlete to use protein powders, they can be useful for anyone who wants to increase the amount of proteins they eat.

Benefits of hemp protein powder

Hemp protein powder offers many benefits:

  • it is a very nutritious, all natural food
  • it is rich in easily digestible, complete proteins (about 50%), fibre (16%), vitamins and minerals.
  • It increases energy
  • helps maintain and grow muscle and all organs.

The plant itself, hemp, benefits the planet too! By using hemp you help increase the cultivation of a plant that's extremely useful. Unlike cotton, it

  • requires much less water to grow
  • almost no fertilizers
  • no pesticides
  • and no herbicides, because it grows so fast that prevents weeds from growing.

It can be used to produce a huge number of articles, from food to paper, fabric, biofuel, plastic and building material. Nothing gets wasted of it.

I think hemp protein powder is the best protein powder for everyone, for men, women, athletes, bodybuilders, vegetarians, vegan and raw food eaters, dieters, children and elderly, because:

  • it contains complete proteins
  • it is not highly processed
  • it is not derived from dairy nor beef (do you know how they feed cows and beef?), nor from soy (do you know most soy is GMO?)
  • does not contain additives
  • doesn't cause bloating and does not have a bad aftertaste.

So any person who objects to animal or GMO products or just wants the most natural food, will find hemp the ideal protein powder.

It is particularly useful for vegetarians and vegans because they may risk eating fewer and incompete proteins. Instead, hemp protein powder provides a high amount of complete proteins, about 50% of its content, depending on brands.

Hemp seeds themselves contain about 30% of proteins.

Protein powder made from hemp contains all the elements that provide optimum nutrition, it is high in complete protein and fibre and low in carbohydrates.

Complete protein means that the proteins have all the essential amino-acids.

Amino-acids are the substances that our bodies need to produce and maintain our muscles, bones, blood, organs etc.

Essential amino-acids means that they are indispensable in our nutrition because our bodies cannot produce them themselves.

Hemp contains all of the amino-acids necessary to humans, including all the essential amino-acids.

Most of hemp protein powder is composed of the protein called edestine, which is the most similar to the human blood and easily assimilated by human body.

How is it made?

Unlike other types of protein powders, such as whey, soy, beef and others, hemp protein powder is not highly processed, it is a raw product.

Different companies may have slightly different ways to operate but, generally, hemp protein powder is produced in a very simple way:

  • the hemp seeds are pressed to extract hemp oil
  • a solid substance is left (called "cake")
  • the cake is then ground
  • from the flour obtained, protein powder is separated from the fibre

and that's it!

The best products are made at low temperature, using no solvents.

Hemp protein powder is dairy and soy free, gluten free, uses no GMOs, no artificial sweeteners get added (acesulfame, aspartame, sucralose, saccharin), it is very easily digestible and doesn't make you feel bloated and leave a bad aftertaste.

Fed up with protein powders that are not suitable for children?

How do I take it?

Hemp protein powder can be eaten raw or cooked but, after doing many experiments, I concluded that it is best eaten raw, added to other foods and liquids.

The easiest way to take it is by mixing it with fruit juice, yogurt, milk or milk alternatives (such as hemp, hazelnut, almond, coconut or soya milk etc.). It is great when mixed with any soups.

Just to add some variety, I started creating my own recipes with hemp protein powder and collecting others with hemp seeds, flour, oil.

How much hemp protein can I eat?

This is a question I've been asked several time. The answer is like with any other food, how much salad or how much meat should I eat? Use your common sense, there are no contro-indications.

I generally eat 3-4 teaspoons added to each meal, or as a snack during the day, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on what I eat and I feel very well, I never had any problems with digestion.
